About 250 kilometres north of Perth is this striking sight, The Pinnacles.
These are a large area of limestone formations rearing up into the sky like giant needles. Seventeenth century Dutch sailors observing them as they passed by sea thought they were ruins of an ancient city built by a forgotten civilization.
The Pinnacles were soft limestone covered by sea shell sand dunes. Over thousands of years rain hardened the limestone into cement but they were still covered by sand. Then the prevailing sea winds gradually blew away the sand to reveal the Pinnacles.
