CAR BODY

Bodywork

Steel monocoque, self-supporting [autoportante] structure progressively deformable [differenziata]. Type 2-door coupe, 2+2 seats, in versions with left and right-hand drive. Designed and built: Carrozzeria Bertone. The body (floorpan, front and rear bulkheads, wheel arches [passaroute]) is given internal anti-vibration and sound-absorbing covering which reaches a maximum thickness of 2.5 cm. Front spoiler in plastic (adopted after the first 100 cars produced).

The standard equipment [dotazione in serie] comprises: front headrests, heated rear window, tinted glass [vetri atermici] and wheels in light alloy.

Suspension

The front suspension is of independent wheels with quadrilateral transverse (members) [quadrliateri trasversali] for the control of the angle of incidence. The shock absorbers are hydraulic, telescopic and anti-foaming [anti emulsione]. Stabiliser bars. On the front suspension the car is equipped with bump stops? [condizionatore] mounted with a thickness of 10.5 mm on the right spring and of 7 mm on the left.

The rear suspension is of rigid axle with two trailing arms [puntoni] and a transverse triangle of reaction hinged on the axle and on the body with flexible connectors. The elastic element is made of helicoid springs. Hydraulic telescopic anti-emulsion shock absorbers coaxial with these springs.

Brakes

Service brakes: system of dual hydraulic circuits given a vacuum servo and modulation of braking depending on the pressure acting on the rear brakes.

Front brakes ventilated disks with 2 cylinders per wheel. Braking surface: 1482 cm2. Diameter and thickness of the disk: 27.2 and 2.2 cm.

Rear brakes ventilated disks with 2 cylinders per wheel. Braking surface: 1268 cm2. Diameter and thickness of the disk: 28.4 and 2 cm.

Emergency brakes (Freni di soccorso) [conglobato] by the normal brakes. Carried out by splitting the brake circuits.

Handbrake: mechanism of central lever with special drums on the rear brakes. On the instrument panel are inserted the warning lights for the hand brake on [inserito] and of the minimum level of brake fluid for efficient control [controllo d'efficienza].

Driving and Steering

Steering wheel with rim in wood and 3 spokes. Steering box in rearward, protected, position. The steering is of the recirculating ball types with ratio of 15:1. The steering wheel has 3 spokes [tiranti] and an adjustment lever [leva di rinvio]. Turning circle 11 meters. Turns of the wheel for total steering in two directions about 3.7 [Note from Malcolm - ie 3.7 turns lock-lock].

Fuel tank

Is located to the rear, below the baggage floor, in a protected position. Capacity 63 litres. Reserve fuel 8 litres.

ENGINE

Oversquare, 8 cylinder with 90 degree V. It is placed in the front position longitudinally and is equipped with three mounts [supporti], of which 2 are lateral and 1 longitudinal.

Cylinder Heads

Two, in light alloy with inserted [riporata] valve seats. Combustion chamber hemispherical with central spark plug.

Pistons

In aluminium with 3 rings, two for compression and one oil scraper [raschiaolio].

Induction system

By overhead valves, controlled directly by the camshafts, driven by chains which act with the interposition [interposizione] of immersion [biccierini] in an oil bath. The primary chain and the two secondaries, mounted all at the front (of the engine), are provided with chain tensioners [tendicantena].
 
Induction phase:  277 degrees 40 minutes

Camshafts

Two for each bank, resting each on 5 supports machined in the head.

Valves

Two per cylinder, placed at a 48 degree V angle. Diameter of the valve heads [luce]: inlet 33 mm, exhaust 28 mm. The exhaust valve are sodium-filled [al sodio].

Block

In light alloy with sleeves in cast iron in direct contact with the coolant.

Crankshaft

In forged steel with cranks at 90 degrees and 5 main bearings [supporti di banco]. Counterweights in sintered tungsten. Main bearings of thin indiumized [indiumizzato] shell type.

Connecting rods

In tungsten steel. Rod bearings of thin indiumized shell.

Lubrication

The lubrication system is of the dry sump type with separate oil tank placed in the engine bay. The lubrication is forced by a rotary pump driven by chains. The system is given moreover a scavenging pump [pompa di recupero], oil radiator and cartridge oil filter on the main circuit. On the instrument panel are placed oil temperature and pressure gauges. Total capacity of the circuit (tank, filter, sump, radiator and pipes [condotti]): 11 kg. Quantity of lubricant necessary for an oil change [sostituzione periodiche]: 8.5 kg.

Induction [Alimentazione]

Carried out by a system of indirect injection with Spica pump of 8 pistons (model AIBB.8C.S75.T250/1). From the tank, the fuel, by means of two electric pumps, is sent, filtered, to the injection pump. The air filter is of the dry type with two ram [dinamiche] air intakes. The air box [condotti di aspirazione] is in aluminium. The inlet manifolds, outstretched and extended [tesi e prolungati], enter the bottom of the air filter (housing) by means of eight intake trumpets. A manual control lever with three positions adjusts the fuel to the climatic conditions. On the instrument panel are placed a fuel level gauge, the warning light for reserve fuel and the warning light for low fuel pressure.

Ignition

Is of the electronic type without condenser [condensatore], with battery and distributor equipped with a centrifugal advance mechanism. Spark plugs Golden Lodge 2HL. The system is made up of 2 separate circuits, each circuit, given an individual ignition coil and ignition module [centralina], is connected to the corresponding contact breaker on the distributor.

Electrical System

12 volts with negative earth. Alternator of 720 W, battery of 64 ah placed in the baggage compartment. The four front headlights are of iodine type [iodio schermati] protected by grills with electro-pneumatic activation which retract automatically at the switching on of the lights. On the instrument panel are mounted an ammeter and the warning lights for the sidelights, the direction indicators and the high beam [fari di profondita].

Cooling

The cooling system is of the closed circuit type with forced circulation via a centrifugal pump, radiator and expansion tank. Fan electrically controlled by thermostatic valve. The total capacity of the system is 12 litres of coolant. On the instrument panel is mounted the water temperature gauge.

TRANSMISSION

Front engine, rear drive. The drive shaft is in two sections made of steel tube. It is given an intermediate support connected flexibly to the body. The first section is provided with a rubber joint at the exit of the gearbox [cambio di velocita], the second section is equipped at each end with a universal joint [cardanico a rullini].

Clutch

Single dry plate with helper springs [parastrappi] for progressive action. Hydraulic control from the pedal. Clutch disks of 228 mm diameter. Diaphragm spring.

Gearbox

Manual [Meccanico], brand ZF, with direct drive and 5 speeds plus reverse with molybdenum synchromesh. Controlled by a short central lever. Lubricant quantity 1.6 litres.

Differential: conical hypoid. Ratio at rear axle 10/41. The differential, with conical gears, is limited slip with locking percentage of 25%. The stamp of the chassis number on the bulkhead of the dashboard was done by Alfa Romeo separately and progressively. It must be emphasised that some of the bulkheads, already stamped, were not used.

COLOURS AND INTERNAL COMBINATIONS

The range of colours of the Montreal was determined, besides the experience of Bertone, also from surveys carried out by Alfa Romeo among the clientele and the dealers on the colours most asked for and those which were turned down.

The commercial direction of Alfa Romeo was continually updated from what was being done at the international level: new colours, new materials for the internal coverings, new production techniques [lavorazione], new trends. As always happens in the variegated world of fashion, it was important to read at the right moment the ideas [idee] correctly and successfully.

Up to a few years before the automobiles in circulation were white, black and grey. Nothing brightly coloured. Then, suddenly, the outbreak of colour: a thousand shades for all cars, for all tastes, following the tendency of the fashion in racing.

For the Montreal was chosen not only red, the signature of the company, but also lively pastel and metallic colours which could characterise to the better its styling.

At the Salon of Geneva of 1970 the Montreal appeared, in fact, in a nice metallic green, which among the others turned out to be very appreciated by the clientele.

For the photo released to the press an example in a most vivid orange was frequently used. This colour, given by Bertone, gave to the bodywork of the Montreal a plasticity and a unique character which the other colours did not.

Here is the complete range of colours of the bodywork in combination with the internal coverings (the type of the paint is thermoplastic acrylic).

Coverings in texalfa of the storage shelves [ripostiglio] of the dashboard: followed the same combination as the front panels.

For the other internal coverings it is not possible to determine the combination relative to the colours of the seats.

We list, nevertheless, the range of their tones:

Cabin carpets:  grey, blue, Havana brown, dark green, beige, red, beige/brown.

Boot carpets: red, blue, grey, yellow/green, brown.

A very few [pochissimo] cars were fitted out with the interior in leather. Even though not proving to be among the official options, Bertone carried out for a particularly demanding clientele the covering of the seats, the door panels and the gaiters of the gear lever and the handbrake in natural leather.
