In December 1998, a few months after I'd uploaded my first version of the translation, to my amazement I received a very complementary email from Luigi Giuliani, the book's author. He has given me his permission to reproduce it:
Caro signor Street Le faccio tanti complimenti!!Or, as far as my limited Italian permits:
in inglese.
Dear Mr Street. I give you hearty [literally "all"] congratulations!!Mr Giuliani's Web site, www.automobilismo.it, which among more typical motoring enthusiast things includes aids for disabled drivers, is well worth a visit. While most of the site is in Italian, if you select Collezionismo, then Acquisti e restauri, you'll come to a site for Alfa enthusiasts; click on the Union Jack and you get the English version of the page for his Alfa data bank!
I had never thought that someone would have translated my book.
At the time of its publication [literally "commercialisation"], the editor thought of a translation into English. Then we had second thoughts and did nothing more on it.
And instead you...
I am a great fan of Alfa Romeo. I have written other books on the Milanese company but I have not found agreement with the editor [presumably to have them published]. So I have continued to be a technical consultant for the restoration of classic Alfa Romeos. Actually I write also on the site: www.automobilsmo.it.
I thank you very much for the joy that your work has given me.
