Image Information: 1280 x 1024. My favourite character from The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I drew the face outlines manually, and flat-filled them, and added noise for texture.
The hair was done separately, using a photograph of one of my neices to get the strands, then changed the colour and form to match Lena's face. The eyes presented particular problems,
and I experimented with complex combinations of Anisotropic Diffusion and Liquefy filters to get them right. Anisotropic Diffusion and Xenofex Fur filters were applied to the hair to
get it the way I wanted, then the jacket was manually drawn on a separate layer. Again, Anisotropic Diffusion, Liquefy and Xenofex HSB filters were applied to the jacket for realism.
Now it came time to do the background. This was modelled in World Machine, rendered in Terragen, and then used as a backdrop in Cinema4D with trees in front. Looking at the final
result, I probably could have dispensed with the Terragen render, as it is all but obscured by the trees! This image was then pulled into Photoshop and Gaussian Blur applied
to create depth-of-field behind the Lena layers. The Terragen render was about 12 minutes, the Cinema4D render took about 20 minutes, and drawing Lena took about 6 hours. The total
production time was about 7 hours all up.
Artistic Information: It's not often I'm so devoted to a fictional character that I spend this much time drawing one. But those who have read the books cannot but admire Lena's
heroism and sacrifice in the story, and her tale so affected me that I felt I had to do this pic! So here she is; the worthiest of all fantasy heroines!
