Play The Game

Image Information: 1280 x 960. This image was rendered in 5 stages. First, the sky and very distant mountains were heightmapped and rendered in Terragen (the distant mountains ended up being obscured). The mountain ridge visible in the picture was then rendered in Terragen and the two images composited to form a backdrop. Then, the green hills and trees were modelled in Cinema4D and rendered over the Terragen landscape. Next, the detailed trees outside the window wered modelled and rendered over resulting backdrop. Finally, the building, furniture, game pieces and characters were rendered over this image to produce the final result. Total render time for all five images was over 9 hours.
Artistic Information: When I tried this as a single Cinema4D render, my computer wouldn't go near it. The octree resulting from objects modelled to 0.01 mm accuracy over an area 20 km on a side would have been gigabytes! So I broke it down into stages. In this image, I began experimenting with facial expressions, using both Kinematics and the Magnet Pull tool to change eye shape, cheek width and lip position.
Picture Story: Kailin gets stuck into Jhareth after realising she's going to lose her third game of thahle. This game, the Aimanhyarin equivalent of chess, is played on a 12 x 12 board with 24 pieces. The object is to get your 6 Gestalt pieces (the six-sided crystals) into the opponent's back row; a Gestalt piece cannot be taken, but is reverted to its 'home' position when coming under attack. Thahle is a game requiring a strong ability to second-guess your opponent to win - especially considering the Aimnahyarin are telepaths!
