This is a simple to use and free software app for android for playing the 'Freezone' radio stations from Internode, an ISP based in South Australia.
The player is based on the RandomMusicPlayer example from the Android SDK with an added frontend for listing the FreeZone channels. It keeps playing in the background and should use hardware decoding for low battery use.
The list of channels is loaded directly from Internode, so it is always up to date and includes channel artwork where available.
Requires android 4.something or other. The only permissions required are INTERNET and WAKE_LOCK. The INTERNET premission is only used to access Internode servers in order to retrieve the station list, icons, and play the streams.
This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. See COPYING and README in the source code.
I have no affiliation with Internode other than being a customer.
This app contains no advertising.
As of the end of 2014 there have been approximately 200 downloads of the apk and 80 downloads of the source. I think one guy mailed me about an earlier version.
As of mid-2016 there have been 400 downloads of the apk and 130 of the source-code. One person mailed me about the android-5+ bug and tested v2.3 for me.
For the source downloads, remember it is GPLv3 so the full source must be made available.
Although it pretty much does all i'm after, if anyone is interested in specific features let me know and i'll think about them next time i have an afternoon to burn. The TODO list below is probably the most likely stuff. Patches are of course will also be considered. I can be contacted via email on gmail or internode using my internode username in the url for this page.
29/7/2016: Bugfix release.
After upgrading my sdk i discovered it's hitting a permission problem on newer android. I've just added the permission to the manifest.
Unfortunately this has also busted the sdk on my ancient dev machine.
10/2/2014: First GPLv3 release with source.
Apart from the source release the main change is the use of a better mechanism for loading the channel art including a fade-in animation which improves the smoothness of the interface somewhat. I also moved the about box from the undiscoverable 'title textview' button to it's own (I) info button. And I changed the background colour for no particular reason.
18/1/2016: It appears the app is currently broken on at least late model samsung phones (android 6?). If I get hold of a machine i'll look at it, although a patch is also a possibility.
Binary only release. Now dynamically loads the list of channels and icons from the rss feed.
In the very unlikely event you have the previous version installed you will need to delete it manually first as this has been signed with a different key.
Original release. This version uses a crappy dialog box to select the channel from a hard-coded list of channels. Not much use.
This is the layout on a high-res device.
A few ideas in no particular order. I only listen to a couple of stations once in a while so none of these are likely to be implemented any time soon unless I'm really bored and looking for something to do.
