Business Development
To the question: "Why do we need market research?" our answer is: "To develop your business".
When we talk to our clients about "business development" we urge them to seek out and evaluate new areas for business growth.
The marketplace is constantly changing. So every company is either gaining or losing market share daily as customer needs move closer or further away from your product or service.
"Reading the market" is an on-going activity, not something to be looked at once every 2-3 years. Listening to customers' changing circumstances and needs, should be a continuous process.
It is no co-incidence that successful corporations spend hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in Australia "listening to public comment" about their products.
If you're doing no research at all, or only conducting a study once every 2-3 years, we recommend a change. Invest a small sum regularly, and slowly build a picture piece-by-piece.
It need not be expensive to undertake market research. (OWL has undertaken studies for small businesses costing less than $5,000). But it could be expensive to do no research and guess what your customers are thinking or where the market is going.
