There was this undergraduate analytical lab course that mu father took
when he attended the university in Warsaw Poland around 1920 or so.  One
of the 
tests that the students were graded on was a simple acid-base
neutralization. 
The students were given a dilute solution of NaOH and HCl and told to mix
equimolar amounts. The Professor would grade the results by going from
bench to bench and sipping the titrant.  I don't think any students in his
class failed. My father "cheated" by sipping the titrant before the prof
got to it <g>.
