PHISA Camp
One of our best attended activities has always been our family camp which is run every 2 years.
The reality is we have 4-5 dedicated committee members to organise a camp
for over 100 people. Organisation includes finding a suitable site (at an
affordable price), sourcing food donations and financial support, planning the
menu, planning and organising guest speakers, finding carers for the children
whilst the parents attend the guest speakers, planning activities for the
children to do, collecting and transporting all the food, activity supplies to
the camp site and that is before anyone actually gets to the camp!!! All of
these committee members have to do this whilst also being employed full time.
Then invariably it is the same committee members who oversee the camp, and
seldom have the opportunity to sit and listen to the guest speakers or spend
much time networking due their supervisory duties at camp. This is the major
reason we have not held a camp in recent years, it is just getting too difficult for
us to do with minimal support from our membership.
We
are aiming to try to run a camp next year but in a very different way. We are
going to seek grant funding that will cover the costs of catering for the camp,
paying carers or specific organisations to run activities for the children, and
subsidise the costs of the camp site. We want to keep our camps as affordable as
we can, but we can no longer organise and run them by ourselves. Should any of
you be interested in forming a “camp committee” to help share the load then
please let us know.
Camps like this take
a lot of organisation and a lot of help from sponsors who provide money
and goods towards running our camp. Please visit our sponsors
page and remember those who help PHISA when making future purchases.
