Protocols
Martial Arts are a strict discipline, this aspect is attractive to some and not so to others. Generally, the Principal Instructor should never have to ask for anything, if one utilises good basic manners and honesty, this is usually more than enough. Ask for an explanation on any points if unclear. These rules have never had to be enforced and for most everybody enjoys good training sessions with like minded people.
A new student should try and adhere to the schools protocols and as well, use these Rules as a check list to chart ones progression:
Stages
- Coming to their first class
- Joining in with a class
- Getting to know the itinerary & the schools protocols (2 ears and one mouth use them that way)
- Learning the first pattern (4–punch)
- Demonstrating the first patterns solo
- Learning the first patterns technically and pedantically
- Finally for the L1 stage is knowing the Formal (DBW). The cycle is now familiar and continues throughout to L3 stage which is loosely black belt standard

General protocol guidelines to be observed in a school:
- Demonstrate at all times respect to the class, students and Instructor's
- Read the official rules on this Web site as they are the guidelines that will be referred to
- Student uniforms (white T–shirt, black training pants) are required in all classes and should be kept clean and tucked in. One should be hygienically clean and keep all open wounds maintained see official rules, there are lots of diseases that can get passed now-a-days and YJQ have recently asked students to maintain these hygiene standards whilst at training as well, (bathroom et cetera).
- Students should not try to learn, practice or demonstrate movements without the correct permissions. See Rules
- Humility is a very important characteristic of a martial artist and this trait is practiced across the board and bi–directional
- High attendance, this rule is covered in the official rules linked to this Website (see rules)
- Senior students are trained with the necessary requirements and will deliver most of the training; questions may be asked pertaining to the exercises. However, subjective opinions/questioning (debating) are not permitted. Any administrative issue can be dealt with by the Principal Instructor, either prior or post training and will be dealt with honestly, fairly and if need be discreetly
- Students are expected to push themselves hard, however it is important to do so correctly to avoid and prevent injury
- Appropriate posture when watching other students review forms, or when not practicing, is as follows: feet shoulder width apart, back straight, hands behind back, at side or in the front, slouching or postures with crossed arms or hands on hips are considered rude and inappropriate
- Fees should be paid on the beginning of each month
- During mediation at the end of the session, one must remain as still as possible. The more advanced students are aware of any movements both in front of and peripherally
