| In this tutorial you will learn how to create the duotone look you see in magazines. This technique is particularly effective when used for photos of people, but can also be used in wallpapers, infact if you have looked through the wallpapers available at this you may have noticed a wallpaper of Jennifer Love Hewitt that uses duotones.
Step 1: Open the image you wish to apply this technique to, I'm going to be using this image of an Bugatti EB110.
Then go to IMAGE->MODE->GRAYSCALE.
It may come up with a message along the lines of "Discard Colour Information?", just select 'Yes'. This will remove all colour from the image.
Step 2: If you do not set the MODE to GRAYSCALE, the duotone mode will not be available. Now with your image in grayscale go to IMAGE->MODE->DUOTONE.
Now you have to decide if you want one ink (Monotone), two (Duotone), three (Tritone) or four (Quadtone). Then chose your colors, don't forget to check the preview option. Since this is a duotone tutorial, we'll select Duotone from the drop down menu. EXTRA NOTE: in the printing industry they only use Duotone, Tri & Quad are rarely used.
You will now see 4 boxes (2 per line) one with a line through it & the other with a colour, and a input field next to them. The first one will have the word 'Black' in the input field, this is default and does not get changed. The second one will have a blank input field, this is where the second colour will be put. Click on the second box on the second line, it should come up with a colour picker. Here is where you can choose the colour that will make the duotone effect, in this tutorial I used the following;
Step 3: With the colour now selected click ok and then ok again. You should now just have your image showng in it's sexy new duotone look. Below is how mine turned out. ![]() |
