In this tutorial you will learn how to create a wood texture for games. There are many different ways of creating a wood look, and each has it's place. This particular one is best used on weapons, especially rifle stocks.

For this tutorial I'll be using this rifle stock.

Step 1: Duplicate the orginal layer (background) and then create a new layer in between the original and duplicate layers. Make sure the duplicate background layer is on top of Layer 1. Now set the opacity of the top layer (background duplicate) to somewhere between 10% and 20%.

Step2: Select two brown colours you want to work with. Im going to use: R:90 G:60 B:5 R:150 G:100 B:5. Once you have your two colours, select Layer 1 and go to FILTER>RENDER>CLOUDS.

Step 3: Then go to FILTER>NOISE>ADD NOISE. The settings im using are: Amount:5 Uniform and Monochromatic.

Step 4: Now once you've added your noise go to FILTER>ARTISTIC>SPONGE. Use the following settings: Brush Size:8 Definition:4 and Smoothness:1.

Resulting in something along these lines.

Step 5: Now go to FILTER>DISTORT>SHEAR. This is where you'll create your wood lines. Move them around to your liking and so fourth.

So now you should have something like the picture below.

Step 6: Here is why we have the background duplicated, select the stock using the POLYGONAL LASSO tool, then inverse the selection and press backspace/delete. This will remove the unwanted wood texture.

Step 7: Use the DODGE and BURN brushes on the edges, except the small front part in my case.

If your happy with the result then well done, usually takes a bit of adjustment at Step 5 before I'm totally happy with it. Now for those that want a different colour/hue of brown the following Optional Step 8 should be of assisstance. Of course once you've got the wood to your liking, you can now delete the top layer (duplicated background).
(OPTIONAL) Step 8: Want a different hue/colour/shade of brown? no worries. Simply go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST and play with the amounts till you find something you like. For the result below I used Brightness:-15 Contrast: 10.
