North Melbourne won its second premiership in 1977. The 1977 Grand Final was only the second drawn Grand Final in the league's history. Collingwood had held North Melbourne goalless during the second and third quarters, but the Kangaroos overturned a 27 point lead to take the lead. Ross "Twiggy" Dunne marked and goaled for Collingwood to tie the scores in the last minute of play. Both teams would have to return a week later for a rematch.
North Melbourne won the rematch by 27 points, continuing Collingwood's miserable run of losses in Grand Finals. Phil Carmen (Collingwood) had been suspended for two matches in the match before the Grand Final. This meant Carmen ended up missing both Grand Finals. Many Mapgie fans still believe had "Fabulous" Phil been playing that they would have won.
