North Melbourne thrashed ladder leaders St Kilda in the club's best performance for the season. North's relentless attack on the ball, and physical hardness went unchallenged during the match. Carey was given a free reign up forward - with the entire forward line left vacant. He defeated no less than 6 opponents in kicking 6.2, setting up several other goals, and getting 20 kicks, 6 handballs and 14 marks. Quite simply Carey was unstoppable.
Carey's performance was so good that it the 3MMM commentators stated on the radio that Carey was the second greatest player they had *ever* seen, after Leigh Matthews.
The entire North team played to script - Pagan could not be more happy with the perfect performance. Everything was there - extreme hardness at the ball, brilliant forward play by Carey and Abraham, a superb defence led by Archer and Pickett, plus complete midfield dominance. And this was against the Number 1 team on the ladder. Robert Harvey (22 possesions) was tagged out of the game by Anthony Stevens (18 possessions). Loewe was totally eclipsed by Martyn, and in the end Loewe went back on to Carey. And McKernan played his best game of the season, against the leading ruckman in the AFL Peter Everitt.
