Another best on ground performance by Wayne Carey led North to a crushing 10 goal last quarter. In a match which saw Melbourne grab the lead in the third quarter North kicked an amazing 10.6 in the last quarter. The burst destroyed Melbourne, and they were unable to get any penetration in to their forward line.
North used a more conventional forward structure, rather than a totally open forward line. Carey should have kicked 10 goals, but missed some easy set shots. Grant returned to form, kicking 5 opportunistic goals from general play. Again, it was the North backline which proved the difference. King broke free to kick two vital goals, and McKernan was eventually used against Neitz. Without Archer and McCartney the team covered the tall Melbourne forward line well.
It was North's fourth win in a row (not accomplished since Round 22, 1996 plus the three finals). It was Carey's third best-on-ground performance, and saw him move to second favourite behind Robert Harvey in the Brownlow betting.
