Match Summary

Melbourne jumped North in the first quarter, moving to an early lead of 20 points which set the tone for the rest of the game. North went in to the game severely hampered by the loss of Capuano and Longmire. With McKernan and Roberts also injured North has to reply on Hewitt to do all the ruck duties. Stynes and White would be an awesome combination to tackle.

It was Melbourne's height up forward - White at full-forward, Neitz, Schwarz, Lyon and Smith were all marking options. Farmer mopped up whatever they didn't hold, and North's defence looked ragged for the first time in years. Melbourne powered away to a 42 point lead by the third quarter, but North fought back.

In the last quarter North managed to storm back to just 1 point down, and with all the momentum looked like steamrolling home. But for the next three minutes Melbourne managed to put a lull on the play, and finally put North away. It was an extremely disappointing result for North, having lost to Melbourne last season, but with all the tall players injured North needed a special effort from the fill-ins.
