North went in to the game without Micky Martyn. It was also Corey McKernan's 100th game. Carlton won the toss and kicked with a 3-4 goal breeze but failed to capitalise on early opportunities. The hapless Blues kicked 5 behinds before Longmire marked and goaled for North. North was to goal again, with Stevens winning a free kick in front of goal. At quarter time, the Blues were goalless.
Pagan set up North's defence to keep Carlton from finding space. McKernan, Sholl and Carey all rotated as loose men in the backline, cutting off the leads. And North managed to keep the ball on the oppposite wing to which the wind was blowing.
It appeared that North would simply run away with the game, but Brown managed to create goals for Carlton, as the Blues suddenly managed to go directly towards goal. Carlton hit the front, with 3 goals in to the wind, before North regained control. North edged to a 4 goal break at half time.
Again Pagan crowded the Carlton forward line, playing loose men in defence, and Carey now on Silvagni. The Blues managed 3.6 with the wind, but North was more attacking in their approach to goal. Rather than bottling play up on the wing as in the first quarter, North went more direct, and with quick small players such as Harvey and Abraham running at goal the Kangas kicked 3.2 against the wind.
Carlton failed to defend against the wind in the final term, which was highlighted by one member of the North Melbourne cheer squad running on to the ground with a wooden spoon to give to the Blues. It was almost as funny as Longmire's defensive error in the third term. In that incident Longmire lost the ball in the sun, and standing in the goalsquare, realised the ball was slowly bouncing through for a goal. Despite a desperate lunge, he failed to stop the ball.
North powered home, kicking 7 goals in the final quarter to bury Carlton.
Longmire kicked 4 goals, playing at full forward with the confidence of 3 or 4 seasons ago. He also played in the ruck and as a loose defender against the wind. He was one of North's best. Peter Bell was best on ground, with 22 disposals and kicking 3.2. It was Carlton's 8th loss in a row - their worst since 1901, and may see the club win its first wooden spoon.
