A fierce contest between last year's Ansett Cup Grand Finalists in Hobart saw St Kilda kick the final two goals of the game, in the last 90 seconds and advance to Round 3. The Roos kicked their only goal of the quarter with two minutes left to hit the front. The lead changed several times all day in what was a terrific exhibition of football. Carey dominated, taking big marks and kicking 3 goals - but not without sending a scare through the North Melbourne camp. Late in the game Carey fell to the ground in a marking contest, and initially it was unclear whether he had re-injured his shoulder. But he soon got up, dazed, and with blood streaming from his head. He was sent off for medical attention, but returned in the final minutes. North couldn't be too disappointed with the effort put in by some of the players. Capuano marked very well, and Welsh continued to impress at full-forward. Harvey continued his goal kicking spree, and provided plenty of speed and midfield drive.
In fact the entire forward line was in constant motion, with speedy players quickly rotating through the undersized flanks. The ground was barely AFL size. In the end St Kilda deserved the win, as they attacked the ball every bit as hard as North. Jason Traianidis, the former Roo, kicked two brilliant goals in the first quarter, and finished with three. North's early accuracy kept them in the game, with St Kilda having several more shots at goal - which eventually carried them over the line by 9 behinds.
Overall North will be happy to get through without any major injuries - McKernan has had a good preseason for the first time in years, and Capuano was the pick of the ruckmen. If the two can remain fit, they provide vital flexability for Pagan. A spare tall defender and an attacking ruckman are essential for North to go further this season.
