North was the only AFL club not to trade players or draft selections in the pre-draft period. North was rumoured to have offered Anthony Rock, Scott Welsh and Glenn Freeborn for Richmond vice-captain Wayne Campbell.

Related Article: Is North the top club at recruiting?
North Melbourne made ten changes to their 1997 player list. Matthew Armstrong didn't
play a senior match in 1997 and retired. The biggest news was that club vice-captain Wayne
Schwass was traded to Sydney. In return North received Shannon Grant and the #27 pick in
the draft. North recruited Shannon Watt with their first pick. Watt is a
centre-half-forward who has been an All-Australian representative. He may be developed
into the centre-half-back position, which is one of the club's weak areas. Bradley
Stephens was recruited from Barooga, and is another centre-half-back. Paul McMahon, who
has played Essendon and Carlton reserves, is a quick rover. He has an atheletic
background, competing in the state finals of the high jump, triple jump and 200 metres.
This continues the recent trend in football to recruit more athletic type players. Joshua
Robertson is a tough midfielder. North has the hardest attack on the ball in the
competition, shown up in statistics on the "hard-ball" gathers. Robertson will
fit well in to North's gameplan. The last player selected was Dion Miles, who won the
Reserves Best and Fairest. He was promoted from the supplementary list.
North also traded Stuart Anderson for Winston Abraham, who has played 38 games for
Fremantle. Mark Stevens was traded for Jason McCartney, who has 75 games experience
at Collingwood and Adelaide.
Jason Daniltchenko was delisted by the club. North Melbourne had offered him as a
trade to other clubs, but received little interest. He is unlikely to be drafted by
another club. Dean Laidley retired after 151 games.

North Melbourne has 10 new players this season, including Fitzroy's Best and Fairest Winner Martin Pike. The only new players with senior experience are the Fitzroy trio of Pike (60 games, 40 goals), Chandler (28 games, 2 goals) and Mellington (24 games, 24 goals).
11 players are gone from last year's list of 42 including the Reserves Best and Fairest Winner Trent Nichols, who struggled to break in to the strong senior list. Ross Smith retired after a career of 224 games - the sixth highest in club history. Ian Fairley also retired after 217 games, ninth highest in club history. Along with Nichols, Keenan Reynolds, Glenn Gorman, Eric Lissendon and Brad Plain were also delisted. Warren Campbell, who didn't play a senior game last season, was also delisted.
