A Lifetime
for
Molong

Patrick Joseph McArdle JP., BEM.
(1890-1988)

Patrick McArdle spent most of his life in Molong, New South Wales, Australia. Born the fifth child of an Irish father, Peter McArdle and a German mother, Kate Schuck. He was taught blacksmithing from his father, who owned and operated the Molong Shoeing Forge. Pat (or as townsfolk knew him, Paddy) took over the running of the blacksmith business and eventually it was handed down to him. He operated the blacksmith shop until the early 1950's and was one of the last old time blacksmiths in Molong.

Paddy McArdle spent his spare time being involved in the community in which he lived. He worked tirelessly for the Catholic community and was involved with the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Hibernian's. He joined the Volunteer Fire Brigade eventually becoming Captain for over 30 years. He also became an Alderman on the Molong Municipal Council for four terms and served as Deputy Mayor.

A book titled "Paddy McArdle and Molong" has been written by Aileen Roberson with the help of Paddy's granddaughter, Catherine Mackenzie. The book is at the publisher and will be launched in April 2002 at The Molong Bowling Club by the Federal Member for Calare, Mr Peter Andren. After costs are deducted the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated by Aileen Roberson to the senior citizens of Molong.

Mrs Roberson has put an enormous effort into the writing of this book and has undergone some personal tragedies and triumphs along this book's journey. It is to her credit that she has been able to continue. Aileen has a great love for history, for Molong and for her family and the community.

Thank you Aileen.
