The SCORESBY Page

The Scoresby connection with the Shepherd family had a great significance on the history of the family. If John Shepherd had not married Susanna Scoresby there probably would have been no sea-going Joseph Shepherd and the Shepherd family may not have migrated to South Australia, at least not in the way that it did.

THE SCORESBY FAMILY

In the 18th century my Scoresby ancestors lived in the parish of Cropton, about 2 miles from the villages of Lastingham and Appleton-le-Moors on the edge of the North York Moors. Earlier generations may have lived in Middleton by Pickering.

William Scoresby was a farmer and lived on a property called Nutholm, several miles out of Cropton village. (The house still stands today, very close to the River Seven, and not easy to access.)

Their eldest son was also named William. He was employed by a farmer but after an incident where he was badly treated he eventually ran away from to Whitby, the nearest sea port, to go to sea. This was in the winter of 1779/80. In 1785 he joined the "Henrietta" a ship in the whaling industry and sailed into Artic waters under the command of Captain Crispin Bean, who was from the parish of Lastingham - adjoining that of Cropton. in 1790 Crispin Bean retired and William Scoresby was made captain of the ship. On his first voyage in 1791 the whale catch was extremely small and William got nothing. Of the seven ships that sailed from Whitby only six returned - and the total catch was 2 whales. Within several years however, William became very successful - Whitby's most successful whaling captain ever - 533 whales on 30 voyages an average of nearly 18 whales a year. The largest catch was in 1798 with 36 whales, though the 1814 voyage yielded the greatest quantity of whale oil - 225 tuns. There was no Greenpeace then. The last voyage William made was in 1822.

William made other achievements apart from his very successful whaling. These included the invention in 1807 of the Crow's Nest used on ships and the voyage of 1806 which reached latitude 81 30' north, the furthermost north reached by ship up to that time, and only 510 miles from the North Pole. This achievement was not bettered for 21 years, and then only by travelling some of the way over the ice, not on board ship.

Captain William's son, also William (1789-1857), was another Scoresby who went to sea. He first went to sea (with his father) in 1800. This was achieved by hiding his hat and pretending he could not find it while on board ship farewelling his father. His father finally decided to take young William with him, much to his mother's horror. When father decided to leave William on the Shetlands his son found a boat to take him out to his father's ship again, just as it was leaving. The result was that he went on the voyage. In 1803 he was apprenticed to his father and went whaling every summer until his last voyage in 1823.

Thereafter he became a minister. He was also interested in science and became famous for his observations. His last experiment (in 1856) on the effect of ship's magnetism on their compasses and took him on a voyage to Australia (Melbourne), where a suburb is named after him (Scoresby).

The Whitby Museum has a section devoted to Whitby's two great captains - William Scoresby and James Cook.
