GRAND FINAL WRAP (4/10/09) Congratulations to the Reserves and Under 18's teams for winning their grand finals. The reserves battle their way from fifth spot to defeat the minor premier Eagles by 12 points. Staring at a 33 point deficit at half-time the Tigers outscored their opponent 10 goals to 2 to record a magnificent victory. Richard O'Grady was judged best on the ground. Clearly the best side in the under 18 competition, Glenelg continued their dominance by thumping Port Adelaide by 64 points. It was a fitting result for the team that lost only two games for the season. Winning any premiership is a fantastic achievement, however the success of the club is rated on league premierships. In 2009 the Glenelg Football Club missed a golden opportunity to add to their four league flags. For those outside of today's premiership successes it is indeed a hollow feeling. PRELIMINARY FINAL v STURT (4/10/09) Let's put out there from the beginning- this one sucked. The most consistent team of the 2009 season will not play in the grand final as the Tigers fell to the Double Blues by five points. In cold windy conditions the Tigers won the toss and elected to kick with a four goal breeze. Captain Ben Mules was a late withdrawal and was replaced by Kellock. Glenelg jumped out to an early two goal advantage but wasted the rest of the quarter. The Tigers dominated the inside 50's 13 to 3 but could only kick two goals for the quarter while keeping the oppostion scoreless. It took Sturt eleven minutes to eliminate Glenelg's meagre 15 point quarter time advantage. However, the Bays responded to the challenge. Kicking into a stiff breeze Glenelg took control of the middle part of the term to stretch the lead out to 14 points. Unfortunately, Glenelg were unable to close out the quarter allowing the Blues to edge ahead at the long break by the slimmest of margins. Missed opportunities were once
again the order of the day. Grima struggles to make the distance from 20
metres (picture)- 3rd quarter. Ruwoldt misses on the run from 15 metres- 2nd
quarter. Cranston misses on the run from 30 metres- 3rd quarter. Backwell
hits the post from a tight angle- 4th quarter. Button and McGregor misses
from set shots- 4th quarter.
Not a bad effort considering the Blues had use of a strong breeze. Right? Surely the second half script would read the Tigers kicking clear with the breeze and then shutting down the game in the last quarter. Right? Think again. The Tigers quickly restored the lead after a Ruory Kirkby mark and goal but once again failed to assert their presence on the scoreboard. Sturt were relentless in denying the Tigers only one more goal for the quarter- McGregor (21st minute)- and in the process kicking three goals, including a magnificent 55 metre goal into a stiff breeze. The Blues headed into lemon time with a seven point advantage. The final quarter was a titantic struggle. Both teams played like there was no tomorrow- this would be true for one. The Tigers controlled the last quarter and surged to a one point lead with ten minutes remaining but like so many times during the major round missed opportunities to put the opposition to bed. Sturt seized on their good fortune and ran into the opening goal two minutes into time-on to leave the Seasiders six points in arrears. It was Sturt's sole goal for the quarter and the last of the preliminary final. In the dying minutes McGregor had one last opportunity to save Glenelg's season but his set shot from 40 metres, near the old scoreboard, sailed right of the big sticks. Shortly afterwards, while the Tigers were launching one final attack the siren sounded. A sickening feeling descended on everyone associated with the Glenelg Football Club. A dream had turned into nightmare. This was not happening! When Central District are demolishing Sturt in the grand final the 2009 preliminary final disaster will be reality. details Lachlan Button gives the Tiger
fans hope after reducing the margin to a point in the final quarter. It ended
up being false hope.
PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL (26/9/09)
Glenelg and Sturt will battle for the right to play Central District in the 2009 SANFL Grand Final. The Tigers recent record against the Blues is impressive. They have won the last nine games including their most recent finals victories in 2008 and 2007. However, these results are just history. Both teams held game winning leads against Central District in this year's major rounds Both teams failed. Both teams are eager to get another crack at the Bulldogs. At 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon only one team will have that opportunity. The Tigers have included Lachlan McGregor in the squad of 23 and omitted Michael Liebelt. SECOND SEMI FINAL v CENTRAL DISTRICT (23/9/09) The Tigers missed a golden opportunity to advance to the Grand Final. Instead will they will need to front up against Sturt in the Preliminary Final to win the the right to challenge for the flag. The Tigers led by 26 points late in the third quarter and seemed destined for a grand final berth. The Dogs had other ideas and stormed home in the last quarter kicking 5 goals to 1 to record a thrilling victory. After falling behind by two goals after two minutes the Tigers took control of the game with five unanwsered goals. Glenelg led by 16 points, however Centrals responded with the next three goals to enter time-on of the second quarter with a four point advantage. The Tigers regained the initiative by kicking five goals of the next six to take a commanding 26 point advantage into the time-on period of the third quarter. The lead should have been greater. Three missed shots kept the door open. The Dogs exploded early in the last quarter quickly reducing the margin and eventually hitting the front at the 15th minute mark. Ruory Kirkby marked strongly one minute later to restore the lead but it was enough. The lead was surrendered for the final time early into time-on. After being the dominant team for over two quarters, Glenelg could only manage one of the last seven goals. Justin McConnell had one last opportunity in the final 90 seconds to be the hero. However, his set shot (35 metres out on a tight angle) failed to navigate its way through the big sticks. The opportunity was lost and so was the game. Unless the football gods are conspiring against the Glenelg Football Club, the Tigers should defeat Sturt in the Peliminary Final and once again challenge the Dogs for the flag. However, football games do not always go according to form. The semi final loss was devastating and the playing group will need to quickly regain their belief and confidence to ensure another crack at the reigning premier. details
Ruory Kirkby celebrates one
of his four goals. Unfortunately it was not enough to get the Tigers over
the line.
PREVIEW SECOND SEMI FINAL (19/9/09)
In a replay of last year second semi final the Tigers will battle it out with the Bulldogs. James Sellar has completed his duties with the Adelaide Crows and has been named in the forward pocket. Mark Mickan will need to decide on whether to play three talls or to omit the promising Lachlan Button. Central District lead the 2009 head-to-head record. On ANZAC day the Tigers were belted by 84 points but bounced back later in the year with a thrilling come from behind draw. The winner will advance to the grand final and the loser will either meet Sturt or the Eagles in the preliminary final.
