A viable alternative to keying (trenching) foundations down into unstable rock strata is to excavate to bedrock, lay a bed of dolomite (or similar) and use formwork to build the foundation up. Special waxed cartons with re-enforcing rod lattices form "beams" of cement in each direction when the formwork is filled. This one took a little over 50 cubic metres. |
