| The power train through the tranmission (from the input shaft at left) is coloured red. Pre Series 3 does not have synchro on this gear. Overall ratio is about 25:1 meaning it's useful for slippery water crossings where a little speed will make up for the loss of traction here and there (the inertial mass priciple) and engine revs are kept high to overcome any temporary ignition failure caused by splash. The water evaporates before the engine looses too many revs. Four wheel drive is automatically engaged in all low gears. There are two sliding components (shown in colour on the Overview) on the shaft between the front and rear outputshafts. These parts lock the shafts together and engage the low ratio cog set. WARNING: Using this gear to obtain maximum pull may result in rear differential or halfshaft breakage if there is no tyre slippage. Eg pulling out tree stumps.
