Epoch

The 1948 Amsterdam Motor show was the first place of public showing for the Land- Rover. No-one expected this tractor/truck thing to be ordered in great quantities. The Wilks brothers just wanted a small project to supplement their war-depleted Rover car orders.

One would have been bonkers to suggest this Land Rover thing would out-sell Rover cars by 1951 ..... but they did!

The first model was simply known as Series 1 and it was available in several styles all based on two chassis lengths - short and long.

The next model, available from 1952, was Series 2. Arguably the toughest, it still offered similar options to the first.

The Series 3 commenced in 1971 and was the last of this style. Series 3 Land Rovers were produced till 1983. Their demise made way for bigger and better things. Many consider it the close of an important era in motor vehicle production.

Of note was the completion of the 1,000,000th Land Rover in 1976.

It is difficult to think of many other vehicles having just three models in more than 35 years yet producing over 2,000,000 units delivered to all corners of the globe!

These expanding Pages are provided to help you re-live some of the Land Rover stories, and as a resource for "Landy" lovers everywhere. Rik Thiel
