RLTA News 2008
September 2008
Club Championships
The RLTA
conducted its annual club championships over the three
evenings of 23, 24 and 25 September. A total of 46
entries were received for the singles, doubles and mixed
doubles events. Each of the events was completed on a
separate night. Players were seeded into two pools and
played in a round-robin format. The winners of each
pool then played a final.

Club Junior Championships
On Wednesday Night at 3pm the 2008 Junior Club
Championships were held at the RLTA. We had an
impressive field of younger generation players than last
year due champion and finalist from last year now being
too old. This opened the Championships up for the guys
and the girls.

New Chairs:
Regular members will have noticed
that the 50 new chairs have finally arrived and are
being put to good use. 16 of these chairs have arm rests
for those who need the support after a long day at
tennis and need the assistance to hold their cold drink.
New T.V.:
There is now a new flat screen
television on a new wall mounting in the clubhouse. This
followed a warranty “trade in” after the demise of the
old one. John Dunnett arranged to rectify a tuning
problem so that he could watch touch football.
Lounge:
Members are able to watch the new T.V.
from the comfort of a lounge while resting their feet on
a rug that was donated by Keith “Keithy” Collyer. Event
co-ordinators are asked to closely check the lounge area
prior to leaving as some members may have nodded off and
could be locked in the clubhouse.
The chairs, upgrade costs of the T.V. and the lounge,
with a total cost of over $3,700, were all purchased
from proceeds of the raffles that are run by Yvonne
Wilson.
Table Tennis:
The club has purchased a table tennis
table and equipment and this has proved to be very
popular with both junior and senior players. It has yet
to be seen whether the use of this will lead to
improvement in play on the court.
Donation:
The Mid-Week Ladies Group has donated
$2,000 to the club and also topped up the supplies in
the first aid kit.
Upgrade of Court 1:
The old surface of court 1 was lifted
by a team of volunteers and sold for a sum of $1,200
(Ian gets the ‘top salesman’ of the month award). This
effort also saved the $900 that the contractors would
have charged. Unfortunately, this saving of $2,100 looks
like being eaten up by a problem with water seepage that
was discovered during the renovations. This water
problem has also led to a delay while it was
investigated. This court will have extra road base prior
to the new surface being laid, and when completed in…….
should have similar drainage properties to courts 6 and

AGM - Feb 2008
The club's AGM was held on 2nd February and was well
supported by club members. The presidents report for 2007
can be viewed by
clicking here.
Our long-serving club patron Jack Finney chaired the meeting
for the election of office bearers for 2008. After doing so
Jack, who is fast approaching his 90th birthday, resigned
his post and the patron's baton was passed to another
well-deserving club stalwart and life member in the (more
attractive) form of Lena Bandiera. All those at the
meeting expressed their heart felt appreciation to Jack and
wife Edna for their long and wonderful association with the
RLTA and wished them both well in their retirement.
Another significant event to take place at the AGM was the
members recognition of the long-term efforts of Bruce Young
who was made a life member of the RLTA. Bruce has the
distinction of being the first non-tennis player ever to be
made a life member of the RLTA. For more than 10 years
Bruce has encouraged and supported his two children who had
chosen to play tennis at our club. In what can only be
described as the perfect role model for other tennis
parents, Bruce agreed to serve on our committee over that
time, first as our Treasurer and finally as our Secretary.
Bruce has now retired from the committee (those two children
are now young adults), but he will not be forgotten and will
certainly be missed.
The team elected to steer the club in 2008 were as follows:
| President: |
Ian Somers |
| Vice President: |
Les Finney |
| Treasurer: |
Bill Tapper |
| Secretary (minutes): |
Vivien Carlson |
| Committee: |
Reg Griffin, Betty McCoy, John Dunnett, Shane
Keefe, Arthur Hart, Bruce Maclean, plus two
representatives from mid-week ladies. |
