In December 1996 I was invited by the Board of the Leeds Rhinos to assist the Club restructuring its coaching and training systems. This invitation resulted from my trip to Wigan RLFC during April/May 1996. I accepted a 6 month appointment as the Club's Skills and Conditioning Coach after being granted leave from my postion at Southern Cross University. In addition I was actively involved in the marketing and management of the Club at the invitation of the CEO Mr. Gary Hetherington. However, my primary role involved developing coaching and training sessions for the Club's Super League squad in conjunction with the Head Coach (Mr. Dean Bell), Assistant Coach (Mr. Damian McGrath) and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Edgar Curtis. During this brief period I conducted several research projects that have subsequently been published and examined player fitness qualities and tympanic and body mass changes resulting from play in Super League.

The squad at this time included:

Barrie McDermott, Richie Blackmore, Adrian Morely, Martin Masella, Gary Mercer, Wayne Collins, Graham Holroyd, Iestyn Harris and Francis Cummins.

During my stay with the Club I also conducted a range of market research projects as a means of assisting the Club's marketing Department to develop marketing strategies for implementation within the Club's overall Marketing Plan. Some of this research has been published in Sport Marketing Quarterly.

In 1997 Leeds Rugby Limited became the world's first dual code partnership, with the Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Tykes. In 2008 the club's fans participated in a comprehensive survey that was part of my PhD research.
