At the time the Salford City REDS competed in the English Super league competition and had a very turbulent start to their 1999 season. As a result, the club's Chairman, Mr. John Wilkinson invited me to visit the club and evaluate its current coaching and training structure. At the same time a new coach was appointed, John Harvey who I had worked with previously at the Gold Coast Seagulls during the team's last 2 seasons in the Winfield Cup (1994-95). My role was one of showing the existing playing and coaching staff what was required in terms of training and preparation for Super League while also helping to smooth John Harvey's transition as the new coach.

Having spent time earlier in 1999 with the Salford City REDS I was invited back by Head Coach John Harvey to help run the squad's pre-season training. My role while at the Club included the following:

More below...

1. Conduct all training sessions while at Salford - these included all skills and conditioning sessions, sprint technique and speed/agility training and all strength training sessions.

2. To write a comprehensive Player Manual (click here to view) for the forthcoming season (Super League V) that outlined all training formats for the entire year, player rules and expectations, periodised strength training programme for the entire squad until the start of the session, and guidelines relating to nutrition, injury management and supplemental training.

3. Conduct a series of fitness tests to determine the squad's baseline fitness and report on the results to all players and members of the coaching staff. This allowed me to continue my research into the fitness qualities of professional rugby league players.

4. Design a season ticket holders survey as a market research tool and present recommendations based on the survey results in consultation with the Club's CEO Mr. David Tarry.

5. Prepared a ticketing policy (season tickets) for consideration as part of the Club's Super League V marketing strategy.
