REPORT on CAHS Convention, 2011 (from Victorian Humanist)

The 46th a.g.m., held at The Tudor Motel, Box Hill, on 30 April, proceeded smoothly under the guidance of the honorary Executive, Rosslyn Ives, Mary Bergin and Ken Wright. HSNSW sent three delegates, HSQ sent one with proxy for another, and HSWA gave two proxies to the chair. HSSA was formally absent, due to its closing down. HSV?s delegates were Stephen Stuart, John Russell and Tom Mole. Leslie Cannold was confirmed as Australian Humanist of the Year, and Affie Adagio, of HSNSW, was announced as Outstanding Humanist Achiever.

The motions on notice, printed in March VH, were all passed (with two minor amendments). The most contentious was HSV1, to adopt a Dalit village, which passed by 6 votes against 4. It obliges CAHS to collect donations from Australian Humanists for this charity which is supervised by IHEU in India. General business included regret at the demise of HSSA and an agreement that other member societies welcome the South Australian members into their fold. Altho CAHS future depends on all its member societies contributing, there was no offer to form the Executive, so leaving the present Executive in place pro tempore.

The lecture sessions on Sunday 1 May explored two themes.

We are pleased to announce the 2011 AHOY is Dr Leslie Cannold who is an author, commentator, ethicist, researcher and social activist. In a country where religious views are often over represented, Leslie provides that thing rare in Australian public life: a secular voice.
