A vertical or dipole antenna cut for the specific freq is best. Shipplotter requires strong clean data for successful decoding. If you are lucky enough to live close to a large body of ocean, the antenna is not so critical. I live 2 kms from the coast, with 180 mtrs elevation, and my radio horizon is 40 nautical miles approx

FREQS VHF CH 87 (161.975Mhz) & CH 88 (162.025 Mhz) Same data on both
Connect DISCRIMINATOR out from scanner (Will not work with speaker out)- to line in on laptop soundcard.
Software - SHIPPLOTTER is the only software available for this purpose
