Can you spot any difference between these two Moons? If you can, you are looking at a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. A Penumbral Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Penumbral portion of the Earth's shadow (see diagram). Penumbral Eclipses are usually subtle and fairly boring, some of them aren't even visible to the naked eye! The photo on the right hand side was taken during maximum Eclipse. You can see the subtle yet distinct shading on the lower right hand side of the Moon by comparing it with the photo on the left, which was taken just before the Eclipse started.
