Here is a photo of the most dominant and well known constellations in the sky; Orion (no, it's not upside down either - it was taken from the Southern Hemisphere, a land where Orion stands on his head!)
A diffuser filter was used on one exposure to emphasise the different colours of the stars, and also their relative brightnesses. A diffuser filter simply "softens" the exposure - almost the same as if the camera was out of focus slightly. This was then combined with an unfiltered exposure, which contained most of the faint stars visible in the photograph. The two photos were registered in Photoshop maunally, and then the layers were combined using the "Lighten" method, with the diffused layer being on top.
