Yep, I'm going back to school. After taking some time out to think about my next career move I realized that getting my Masters in Computer Science would be more challenging, more fun and more advantageous to my career than would be adding yet more years of programming experience to my résumé. Plus, with a Masters in Comp Sci a wider range of jobs should be available to me.
Now, admittedly some of the best High Tech schools are located in my beautiful state of California. But, none of them are located on the Monterey Peninsula so I was preparing to move regardless of what school I attended. I guess that's when that Viking blood re-surfaced... time to explore! (The people of Australia better hope that those burning and pillaging instincts have been lost somewhere through the centuries!?)
Anyway, when I saw that Australia has several excellent High Tech schools, my mind was made up. Not only will I get an awesome education but I'll have a whole Island-Continent to explore in my spare time.
The 2 year program at the University of New South Wales in which I'm enrolled is well suited for me. Not only does it have many courses in my areas of interest (AI, Knowledge Based Systems, Advanced Graphics) but also it takes a from-the-ground-up approach which will help fill in any gaps from my having gotten my bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, not Computer Science. Plus, UNSW has a pretty nice location, too. It's about 4 miles south of down-town Sydney.
Contrary to popular belief, kangaroos do not typically drink beer. But, if one were of a mind to (as our friend to the left), you can bet that it wouldn't be Budweiser!
