DSTO: Vacation Employee Final Assessment
Original can be presented upon request
Supervisor's Name: Greg Judd.
Division & Group: LOD / Land Systems.
Brief Outline of Work Undertaken
Stephen has contributed to the development of Land Systems branch's System Concept
Demonstrator by developing a Plans and Operations Server in Java. He has used Java's
Remote Method Invocation (RMI) mechanism to connect Clients to this server and JDBC
to develop code to control the creation, querying, updating and deletion of the
Objects managed by the Server to an Oracle Database. To do this Stephen has developed
skills in advanced Java programming, but also understanding complex System's
Architecture and the Object Model being developed to support it. He has also been
required to develop an understanding of Military operations and planning in the Land
Environment.
Assessment of Work Performance
Stephen's main deliverable has been Java code. We have been impressed by his ability
to quickly come to grips with many difficult concepts, some of which were only in the
early stages of development. His skills have enabled him to meet our requirements by not
only producing a working product, but by using his initiative to question these
guidelines and develop solutions where there were significant implementation problems.
Stephen has had limited opportunity to display his written communication skills, but I
am sure they would prove to be very good.
Value of Work Performed to DSTO
The work Stephen has completed will hasten the development of our Branch's System Concept
Demonstrator (being a complex development involving 2 external companies, as well as
internal development). The SCD will be used by DSTO researchers to conduct experiments
relating to Command and Control Architectures, decision support tools, and situational
awareness in the Land Force.
Career Potential
Stephen will excel as a Programmer / Software Engineer. I believe he has shown the potential
to expand his skill set to include research and development in the DSTO environment.
