Studio Flamenco offers a fully professional Adelaide-based flamenco music and dance ensemble. They are a dynamic group of flamenco dancers and musicians with vast performance experience, including festivals, functions and theatre productions as well as film and television.

The group is directed by dancer Emma Fernée and dancer/percussionist Susi Masi with principal guitarists Aloysius Leeson and Florian. Also performing with Studio Flamenco are dancers, singers and musicians chosen from among the best flamenco artists in Australia.

For two years their annual "Tablao Flamenco" productions have been well received by packed houses. Critics have described Studio Flamenco as:

Emma Fernée (dance)

Emma has over a decade of experience as a flamenco dancer. Training in Sevilla and Madrid under flamenco masters such as Inmaculada Ortega, Manuela Rios and Marco Flores she founded Studio Flamenco, with sister Susi Masi, in 2004. Since then she has performed in and co-directed the critically-acclaimed ‘Tablao Flamenco’ and has appeared as an invited artist at WOMADelaide and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival.

 

Susi Masi (dance)

Returned to Australia in 2007 after her third extended period of training in Spain with flamenco masters, including Juana Amaya, Alicia Márquez and Ramón Martínez. As co-director and principal dancer of ‘Studio Flamenco’, Susi has featured in countless theatre productions and festivals, including WOMADelaide and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival.

 

 

 

Lisa Vertue (dance)

Has trained in many dance forms, most recently focusing on flamenco. She has studied with international artists including Ana Romero, Antonio Vargas and Ramon Martinez, and has performed with companies Teatro del Mundo and Studio Flamenco. With Studio Flamenco her recent performances include the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, “Peña Flamenca”, “Flamenco @ FAD” and El Rocio Spanish Festival.

Aloysius Leeson (guitar)

Aloysius Leeson is a guitarist with a long running infatuation with flamenco. This led to spending time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers, studying with maestro's and playing at juergas (parties). Eventually he was able to work at the dance studios of Javier Cruz and Maria Angeles in Seville , and since coming back to Adelaide, Australia he has continued to work with local singers and dancers, including Studio Flamenco .

Before this Aloysius had been playing guitar for 17 years. It was after studying classical guitar at the Elder Conservatorium in 1992 that he took up flamenco guitar and began his flamenco experience. He recently released his second CD Chispa Flamenca with the help of a grant from Arts SA.

Florian (guitar)

Hailing from Romania and living in Australia, Florian is an accomplished flamenco guitarist who has studied and performed with Australian and international dancers and musicians for many years. He is renowned for his soulful interpretation of flamenco guitar and character stage presence. His original compositions encompass a unique Romanian folk-tinged style. Florian’s recent work includes 'Una Noche de Flamenco' at the Scott Theatre, Adelaide,‘Contratiempo’, featuring Jerez-based dancer Tomás Arroquero, and Velada Flamenco’s ‘Sincopa’.

Mari Olivares (voice)
Mari was born in Spain where she studied flamenco dance with Manolo Marin and singing with Juan del Gastor. She has performed for Australian audiences as a dancer and singer since 1986 and has produced many theatre and film productions including ‘Alborada Flamenca’, ‘Sigueme’ and ‘Flamenco Kids’. Mari has published numerous articles on flamenco in Australia and developed the ‘Flamenco in Perspective’ undergraduate course at Flinders University. She has also worked as a supporting artist in recordings by flamenco guitarists Markota and Aloysius Leeson.


Adrian Van Nunen (percussion)
Adrian has featured in performances including Studio Flamenco’s ‘Tablao Flamenco II’, as well as performances in the Adelaide Fringe 2004, Bellingen Flamenco Festival 2003 and Velada Flamenco’s ‘Sincopa’ in 2005. In 2004, he studied flamenco in Sevilla, accompanying the classes of flamenco icon ‘El Torombo’. He is principal percussionist on Aloysius Leeson’s CD, ‘Chispa Flamenca’, released in 2005.
