Susan grew up barefoot on the beaches of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. After a brush with a science degree, she fell into a sewing career as a contract and sample seamstress working for various fashion designers. In the late 90's with a toddler and baby on the way the family moved to Adelaide to experience more of Australia. Her love for fabric led her to explore textile design and embellishment, studying Screen Printing at Croydon TAFE and Advanced techniques at Jenny Gregson’s Adelaide Studio. Susan carried on her studies with a Certificate IV in Art Practice-Textiles at O'Halloran Hill under Agneishka Golda. Even though her two young children would have liked a normal mum with no homework, she decided to carry on with her studies graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Applied Design with studios in life drawing, painting and majoring in printmaking. Since graduating, Susan has dedicated her time to exhibiting and creating her business, Luna Bird.
“Luna Bird allows me to combine my skills as an artist with my sewing knowledge and experience to produce beautiful and unusual soft furnishings, napery and artworks which are collectable, comfortable and functional. I love quirky things; I can’t help being drawn to them. My artists’ books and soft toys are quite unusual: life should be fun. I'm enthralled with the physical, tactile side of visual arts and textiles. Whether it's charcoal under your nails or ink up to your elbows I like to feel the things I'm creating. I get a lot of inspiration from my home and garden. I love to bake, I love gardening, and I enjoy creating a place of comfort. One of my favorite things to do is sit in the shade of my apricot tree with my trusty sketchbook, watching and listening to all the beautiful little birds that visit my garden. Bliss!"
