Getting your block back to health

In this section of the site we present resources and materials with regard to weed control and revegetation.

It's worth pointing out that this information is viable for properties or areas up to about 25 acres. Larger areas of land obviously require different approaches although much of the information presented here is transferable to a certain extent.

Much of what we have learnt in the past few years has come from the books Top End Native Plants by John Brock and Weeds of the Wet Dry Tropics by Nicholas Smith.

We have learnt lots about what not to do from many of the locals in the area; the paucity of knowledge on the ground is scary. We have been sold a number 'rich ideas' from bulldozing our mango orchard to mis-identification of common species.

Fortunately treehugger is a keen researcher with no stone being (carefully, there may be a snake) unturned in the quest for knowledge. The staff and scientists at the Herbarium Palmerston have been patient and helpful, and we encourage you to take advantage of their plant identification service - timely, informative and free. Check out the services in your local area for government or council assistance with plant identification.

Similarly, Greening Australia have proved helpful with our revegetation plans. Unfortunately our local coucil has proven to be less than receptive to initiating environmental policies. Development is the name of the game. But do we really need another mall? Thanks to all of the individuals who we meet occassionally who turn out to be secret botanists, or amateur appiarists and provide us with a wealth of practical and scientific insight. We are proud to say that we are still learning and always will be - looking after the earth takes along time.
