Old and New Parliament House in
Canberra and Australia’s Floral Emblem - The Wattle

Before the first Europeans began exploration in
the 17th century, Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from
South East Asia about 40,000 years ago.
There where no formal territory claims made until 1770, when
Captain James Cook took possession in the name of Great Britain.
Six colonies were created in the late 18th & 19th centuries.
These colonies joined to become the Federated States of the
Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly
develop its agricultural & manufacturing industries, & to
make a major contribution to the British in World War I &
II.
In recent times, Australia has transformed itself into an
internationally competitive, advanced market economy boasting one
of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1900's, due in
large part to economic reforms adopted by the Hawke Labor
Government in the 1980's.
