The United Nations has declared 2003 the Year of Freshwater. The aim is to increase the awareness of people and governments throughout the world of the importance of sustainable freshwater use, management and protection.

2003 International Year of Freshwater in Australia - Environment Australia
The availability of freshwater for human consumption, agricultural production and ecosystem health is of vital importance to all Australians. The proclamation of 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater by the United Nations General Assembly will provide valuable opportunities for Australian communities to learn about and become more involved in freshwater issues.

National Water Week , 19-25 October 2003
National Water Week is about raising public awareness of water issues. This important event is held in all States and Territories and is generally held during the third week of October each year. It is a focus for the community as well as for the water industry and organisations entrusted with managing the states' water resources.

EdNA Online Freshwater Category
So many freshwater resources are being created, they now have their own EdNA Online Category. Particularly intended for school sites created by teachers and students, but also includes organisational sites with resources for teachers. The resources are presented in alphabetical order in pages of 10 for browsing.

  A water awareness mini-site incorporating the work of children from Patterson Lakes PS, with poems, posters, a mystery word game and more about saving water and the message that water is vital for life.
• Freshwater Fury - a Learning Opportunity
  The Freshwater Waterways of Australia have been captured by some of the world’s most feared villains. Your task is to free the waterways so they can again become the home of our native plants and animals. By completing challenges you will earn gems that once collected, will help spell out the name of the most feared villain. Learn the name of this villain and you will be named ‘Hero of the Waterway.’
• Water Resource Links
  A set of links on the subject of water resources created by the Geography Teachers' Association of South Australia. It includes activities, research content, and subject specific links on water, water resources, fresh water. Constructed for the International Year of Freshwater.
• Human Impact on Water Environments
  Unit of Inquiry developed for Pembroke Junior School, South Australia, with lesson ideas on human impact on water environments such as rivers and coasts. Humans have impacted on the aquatic environment of rivers and beaches. Includes work done on Torrens Catchment, Murray Catchment and Adelaide Beaches.

  This is a teacher developed page that links to a unit of work on human impacts on water environments and other useful internet sites.
