Some Fun Things To Do
With Tessellations:
- get some books on MC Escher
- he was a Dutch artist/
mathematician and did some fantastic stuff with
tessellations (as well as pictures that "go nowhere")
- you can buy colouring books of his work
Most libraries will have his books,
or there's some internet sites below
- get the kids to make some - start with a square
(it's easiest but other shapes can be used).
Cut a shape from one side and tape it in exactly
the same place facing the same direction as
the cut out section on the opposite (parallel) side
- you now have a very simple shape that will exactly
(depending on accuracy of cutting and pasting)
tessellate (trace around one).
- once the kids have mastered the simple square,
make some that are pictures - as long as whatever
is cut from one side is stuck to the other, it will tessellate.
- experiment with different shapes as tessellation
pieces
- some will need a combination of two shapes to
fill an area (eg overlapping hexagons will create a
star in the middle if corners overlap)
- Dale Seymour put out a book years ago called
Tessellation Masters
(I have the name and I remember if had a green
cover, but don't have any other details, sorry),
but it was full of all sorts of tessellation pages
- blackline masters that could be studied or
coloured.
There are all sorts of patterns that could be
developed with them.
Something else you could try - only allow the kids
to use a certain number of colours and not have any
one colour touching - see if it's possible to colour the
whole page with 4 colours or 6 colours etc.
- just study the complexities of various tessellations
and colour use (see below for Escher and other sites)
- once the kids have made some (physically),
draw a grid on paper and draw tessellations and
make into animals or ghosts or whatever
(by looking at Escher's stuff they'll get an idea
of colour use for effective patterns.)

There are probably lots of other things, that
someone else has probably done, that I've never
thought of, though.

Here's a site for Escher's stuff - a commercial site
but shows the prints...especially look at day and night
http://www.worldofescher.com/

Another one - look at gecko and fish
- very interesting egs of complex tessellations
http://www.cs.unc.edu/~davemc/Pic/Escher/

Natural Math Competition

To all who wish to participate in the Challenge in the
Year 2002, we have provided sample questions for the
Year 4-5, Year 6-7  and Year 8-9 Challenges, adapted
from the first year of operation of the Challenge.
Why don't you try out these questions with the children in your class and see how you go with them.
Then ... show them the solutions that were provided
by some teams from Australia, and see how they

feel about the way in which we think the questions should
be answered. You will see that we are looking for a lot more than just the right answer!
http://www.naturalmaths.com.au/challenge.htm
Cost: $66 per team, covers 8 sessions (2 each term) with
associated feedback.

Math Problems

Here are some starters - the kids could choose the one that appeals
most, gradually working through all of them. Maths homework for a term!

1. How many days have you been alive?
Will you ever live to be one million days old?  Jeannie Clament died at the
age of 124 - how many days had she been alive?  How many more days
would you need to live
to match her?
2. Using the values of letters as they are in Scrabble,
how many points is your name worth?
Are the longest names worth the most points?
Which three-letter name would score the most points?
3. Gather some Easter catalogues - you have
$20.00 to buy something
for each member of your family?
Who can get closest to $20.00 without going over?
4. Design a paper bridge strong enough to hold a
Matchbox car.
5. Have the children estimate the distance around their hand
from one wristbone to the other, going in and out the fingers.
Design a way to measure it accurately.  Whose guess was the closest?
6. Which is the most commonly used letter in the English alphabet?
Prove it!
7. You are at the casino, ready to roll two regular 1 - 6 dice.
When they land you count the spots showing
Which number is most likely to come up? Why?
8. Keep a list of all the times you use your mathematical
knowledge in one day.
9. Why do the dates of Easter and Chinese New Year
change every year?
10. Plan a holiday for you and your family for one week to Uluru.
What are all the things you would need to consider?
What would the total cost be?.
Can you do it for less than $2000?

If you can track down copies of either of my books
Maths About Me or Maths About My Year, you will find many project ideas in there, all of which relate directly
to the kids and their lives.

PROBLEM SOLVING - Projects

1. Measure EVERYTHING on a bicycle....... good open ended one especially if lateral thinkers can go into
speeds and air pressures etc.
You need a few bikes.

2. make 1 000 000 dots.
Use grid paper and mark every corner

on the page.
How many pieces of paper needed?
How many person hours etc.
This takes a lot of time.
1 000 000 is more than most of us realise!

3 Big Research anything big.
The Biggest country (population,
area, .....)
The tallest building.... Longest river etc
Your Guinness book of records type thing and then
develop that so that River... number of fish species,
number fisherman Sizes of catches and onto
sustainability etc

4. AirWatch involves gather air population data
which can be entered
on-line and lots of other
statistical type info could be worked on in regard to
that and possible impact of weather Pollution output
from buses cp cars. etc
What is the break even passenger load needed
for the bus to produce less
pollution per person
carried etc.

Short Cuts For Math

Curious and Useful Math

BEATCALC: Beat the Calculator!
http://mathforum.org/k12/mathtips/beatcalc.html

An Example Of BeatCalc
Startle those brain cells this morning by stressing
them to multiply numbers by 8 5/8. They will respond
and you will be producing answers faster than a
calculator user.

1. Ask friend for a 2-digit number.
2. Suggest it be multiplied by 8 5/8.
3. You produce the answer using mental math.

                    How to do it.

Multiply number by 7.
Add one zero.
Subtract original #.
Divide by 8.

                      Examples

First pick is 21.
Multiply by 7. 7x21=147.
Add one zerol 1470
Subtract original #. 1470-21=1470-20-1=
        1450-1=1449.
Divide by 8. 1449/8 = 181 1/8.
So 8 5/8 x 21 is 181 1/8.

Next selection is 34.
Multiply by 7. 7x34=210+28=238
Add one zero. 2380
Subtract original #. 2380-34=2380-30-4=
    2350=4=2346.
Divide by 8. 2346/8 = 293 2/8
So 8 5/8 x 34 is 293 1/4.

Practice subtracting from left to right
and you will be skipping through these step
quickly and accurately.

Challenge a friend and
