STORYTELLING
There
are numerous good resources available on promotional
writing.
These
resources go into great depth about the process and sequence of writing
sales copy, the magic words... the formulas.
However,
most information on writing fails to mention ONE critical thing!
Good
writing is ALWAYS about good storytelling.
To write
sales copy (which primarily is what web site copy is all about) you have
to tell the story of the product or service you're selling.
You see
for millions of years Human Beings sat around fires and told each other
stories. Prior to the invention of written language this was the
way information was passed on from one generation to another. We
told each other stories, and this desire for stories (and the
ability to tell them) is encoded in our genes.
And... the
Internet (interestingly enough) has rekindled this interest in... and
the desire to express (albeit for commercial reasons) via the written
word again.
So, in
short... forget the manuals and 'mastering sales formulas', just
tell the story of the product you're promoting. WRITE your own
stories.
How is
this done?
Well,
writing is a time honoured discipline. You have to do your
exercises.
A
writer, writes. The more you write, the better you'll
get... and in the process you'll find YOUR own 'voice'.
Now, every
good affiliate program on the planet has affiliate "tools"...
and the lazy affiliate picks up these tools and uses them to promote
products... the autoresponder message sets... the sales pages... the
ezine adds. And then affiliates wonder why they don't get enough sales?
The
reason is simple. After seeing the same material hundreds of
times a visitor to your site finds the sameole, sameole copy B O R I N
G. It looks like sales copy, reads like sales copy, and IS...
sales copy.
And... eventually
people's brains just SWITCH OFF.
If you
want to write good copy, sure... read the books, follow the formulas
(many are time tested and true), but then... throw all of these away and
WRITE YOUR OWN (sales) STORIES using your own voice.
YOUR
sales 'stories' in YOUR voice will ALWAYS sell products that
you feel passionate about much better than any 'cut and paste' material.
Cheers
